The Mercedes-AMG One has attracted a lot of interest because it’s a road-legal car with an F1 mechanic. However, as the list of 10 road cars with Formula 1 engines below shows, this isn’t the first, and it won’t be the last.

The reality is that very few, if any, road cars have race engines, road cars are produced in relatively short series to be raced later on, like the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS or the Toyota GR Yaris were born to satisfy the eventual Changed FIA Rally Rules. In the ’80s and ’90s, the Automobile Association required the homologation of a range of road cars from brands that wanted to compete at the highest level, be it touring cars, Le Mans or rallying, with only Formula 1 left out. New legislation and high development costs meant that the rule was gradually being revised until it effectively disappeared. We start with Alfa Romeo, one of the greatest brands in motorsport, once again as a sponsor of the Formula 1 team. We’re taking a little license here because our next protagonist isn’t exactly using a Formula 1 engine, but a Formula 2 engine.

Ferrari wasn’t doing well in the mid-’60s, and due to some financial woes, Ford beat them at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the all-around Ford GT 40. During this period, more specifically in 1967, the Ferrari Dino 206 GT will be seen in the light.

The model used a 2-liter, 180-horsepower V6 engine, which was installed into Formula 2 the following year, 1968, for reasons of need and to keep costs down.

Jackie Ickx won a few races that season and was beaten by other big-name riders like Dereck Bell and Chris Amon.


We had to wait a full 28 years to see a Ferrari road car with a Formula 1 engine, like Mercedes is now doing with the AMG One. In 1995, they decided to build one of the company’s most iconic cars to celebrate the brand’s 50-year history, even though it was launched two years before the anniversary.

The Ferrari F50, known internally as the “Tipo F130B”, was a technology prodigy at the time. A total of 349 examples were built, all powered by the 4.7-litre V12 engine developed from the 1990 Formula 1 Ferrari 641 driven by Nigell Mansell and Alain Prost.

The supercar produces 520 hp and 471 Nm of torque at just over 1,200 kg. It was the first car launched after Enzo Ferrari’s death.

Let’s face it, Brits and Americans have always had a quirky place when it comes to preparing their cars. Is this the only way to explain the existence of this delivery van with a Formula 1 engine?

Following the success of the first Transit Supervan 1 in 1971, the Ford Transit Supervan 2 was born in 1986 as part of a Ford UK advertising campaign using a Ford GT 40 engine from the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

What makes this car special is the use of a Cosworth 3.9 signature 3.9-liter V8 engine derived from the F1 DFV. That hits nearly 600 horsepower and could exceed 300 kilometers per hour.

This madness is the work of racing technology and was on display at the inaugural Truck Grand Prix at Donington Park.

Our next protagonist, like the Ferrari Dino 206 GT, has a little gimmick. In the early 1990s, the German company partnered with Formula 1 team Footwork Arrows to develop V12 engines for racing cars.

However, several engine design issues and the resulting unreliability led the team to abandon the project and eventually get the Cosworth engine.

Instead of scrapping the project, German engineers started work on the engine the following season, albeit with two fewer cylinders, although the results of this work were not reflected in F1.

After the actual work was done, it was considered ready for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but the project was abandoned two days before the first equipment was tested in mid-1999. The reason is that part of Porsche’s engineering team moved departments to develop the car that would eventually save the company — the Porsche Cayenne.

They say there are no two or three, or that the third succeeded, and during the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, Porsche introduced the street version as a concept. Public interest, combined with the proceeds of the Cayenne, eventually led the Stuttgart-based company to launch the final version, which went on sale in 2004.

A total of 1,270 examples were produced, all with the 5.7-liter V10 engine, 612 hp and 590 Nm of torque.

Complicated to handle, it had the honor of being the car that killed actor Paul Walker, while Jay Leno had a serious accident.

If the British go crazy first, and the French don’t want less, in tribute to one of its most iconic cars, Renault has decided to install a Formula 1 engine to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Renault Espace F1 concept. It came out in 1994 and they created it with the help of Matra.

The engine is a 3.5-liter V10 with power increased to 820 hp from the 1993 F1 world champion Williams-Renault FW15C. With a lightweight carbon fiber body, it is able to hit 312 km/h in 2.8 seconds and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.

While many readers may think that Yamaha is a brand primarily dedicated to building musical instruments or motorcycles, the truth is that its engineering department has created some of the world’s most spectacular and well-known gasoline engines, such as those equipped with Lexus The V10 engine of the LF-A.

The model’s history began in 1989, in the midst of Japan’s growing economy, when the Japanese company started racing in Formula 1, inspired by Honda’s success.

Its sporting presence in Formula 1 will be very special, as it will be accompanied by a road car, a vehicle that incorporates the latest technological advancements at a high price and full of exclusivity.

The name is simple as it derives from the engine used by the Formula 1 engine itself, called the OX99. This is the naturally aspirated 3.5 litre short stroke V12 engine used in the Brabham BT59. In the road configuration, the mechanic produces 405 hp at 10,000 rpm.

Originally designed as a single-seater, management thought it would be nice to put a second seat for possible passengers, but given the original single-seat configuration, this would be directly behind the driver, as if it were a tandem.

In 1994, one of the samples of the popular new generation Ford Transit, one of the best-selling commercial vehicles, received a very special gift. This is the V8 Cosworth engine used by the Benetton team, with a displacement of 3.5 liters and an output of 730 hp, mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox.

Driving that F1 car was the very young Michael Schumacher, who would be crowned world champion the year after Ayrton Senna’s death.

It’s one of the few cars on this list that has been sold to the public and is currently available on the used market for a relatively reasonable price. In this case we are referring to the BMW M5 with the E60 body. Its appearance as a premium performance sedan is hidden under the hood, this time at the front, and is a true “sleeper.”

It’s a 5-litre V10 directly derived from the engine used by the BMW Williams Formula 1 team in the Williams FW27 that same season, driven by Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld. A sweetened version of this engine hits around 20,000 rpm and has an output of 507 hp and an electronic speed limiter of 250 km/h. It is mated to a seven-speed semi-automatic SMG III transmission.
